Detergent Fragrance Matching & Bulk Supply
Recreate the scent of your reference detergent, fabric softener or surface cleaner. Evaluate a developed sample, then choose whether to purchase fragrance concentrate in 20 kg quantities.
Have a cleaning product with a fragrance you want for your own product range?
Formulation Market offers detergent fragrance matching and bulk fragrance supply through our partner fragrance laboratories. You send us a sample of the liquid product containing your target scent, and the laboratory develops a matching fragrance concentrate based on that reference.
Laboratory development takes approximately 2–3 weeks after receipt of your reference sample. We then send you a fragrance sample for evaluation. After approving the scent, you may choose to purchase the concentrate and use it to develop or manufacture your own product.

What Is Detergent Fragrance Matching?
Detergent fragrance matching is the development of a fragrance concentrate that recreates the scent character of an existing cleaning product. It is also called cleaning-product scent matching, fragrance duplication or fragrance recreation.
Instead of choosing a general description such as “fresh laundry” or “floral,” you provide a physical reference. That sample communicates the particular fragrance you want to reproduce.
Your reference may be a laundry detergent, fabric softener, surface cleaner or an existing fragrance concentrate. Our partner laboratories evaluate the sample and develop a matching scent for your project.
The developed sample allows you to compare the result with your reference before deciding whether to order the fragrance in bulk.
Laundry Detergent Fragrance Matching
A laundry detergent’s fragrance is experienced at several stages, from opening the bottle to handling the washed and dried fabric.
When requesting a laundry detergent fragrance match, explain which stages matter most to your product:
-
In the bottle: the scent when the packaging is opened.
-
During washing: the fragrance experienced while the product is in use.
-
On wet laundry: the scent immediately after washing.
-
On dry fabric: the fragrance after the laundry has dried.
If your main objective is the scent left on dry clothing, include that requirement in your initial enquiry. The developed fragrance should be assessed through the intended wash and drying process, rather than only compared directly from a sample bottle.
Tell us about your detergent base, planned fragrance dosage and performance expectations so that the project has a clear target.
Fabric Softener Fragrance Matching
Looking to reproduce the scent of a fabric softener?
Send a representative sample and describe the fragrance characteristics you want to preserve. These might include a clean floral impression, a soft musky character, a fresh opening or a warmer fragrance on dry fabric.
Include your expectations for intensity and scent retention, along with any available information about your softener formulation and intended use.
Evaluate the developed concentrate in your actual softener base and through representative washing and drying conditions. This helps you assess how the scent performs in the product your customers will use.
If you want a coordinated scent across a detergent and softener range, identify both applications at the beginning of the project.
Surface Cleaner Fragrance Matching
We also work from liquid surface cleaner and multipurpose cleaner references.
For these projects, explain the intended application and the fragrance experience you want during and after cleaning. Let us know whether the product is ready to use or diluted before use.
Useful details include:
-
The reference cleaner and a physical sample.
-
Your intended product format and base.
-
Whether customers will dilute the product.
-
The scent intensity you want during cleaning.
-
The fragrance impression you want after use.
A physical reference helps communicate the specific scent profile, while your application details explain how that fragrance needs to be evaluated.
How Our Detergent Scent Matching Service Works
1. Send Your Reference Product
First, send us a sample of the detergent, fabric softener or liquid cleaner containing the fragrance you want to recreate. An existing fragrance concentrate can also be submitted as a reference.
Contact us before shipping. We will confirm the required sample quantity and provide shipping instructions for your project.
2. Laboratory Development: Approximately 2–3 Weeks
After receiving your reference sample, our partner fragrance laboratories evaluate its scent and develop a matching fragrance concentrate.
Laboratory development takes approximately 2–3 weeks from receipt of the sample. Reference shipping and delivery of the developed sample are additional to this laboratory period.
3. Receive Your Matched Fragrance Sample
Once laboratory development is complete, we send you a sample of the recreated fragrance.
You can compare it with the original reference and evaluate whether its scent character meets your expectations.
4. Test the Fragrance and Give Your Approval
Evaluate the sample in your intended product base at your planned fragrance dosage. Compare it at the stages that matter to your application, such as the scent in the bottle, on dry fabric or during surface cleaning.
Share your feedback and approve the fragrance before deciding whether to proceed with bulk purchasing.
5. Choose Whether to Purchase the Concentrate
After sample approval, you may choose to purchase the fragrance concentrate in 20 kg quantities, subject to the agreed commercial terms.
You can use the concentrate to develop your own product formulation, incorporate it into an existing formulation or work with your chosen manufacturer.
If you also need help developing the finished detergent or cleaning-product formulation, mention that requirement so its scope can be discussed separately.
Scent Similarity and Finished-Product Performance
The scent match and the performance of your finished product should both be evaluated.
A fragrance that smells close to the reference in a sample bottle still needs to be assessed in your intended formulation. Product base, fragrance dosage, dilution and conditions of use can influence the result.
For your application evaluation, consider:
-
Similarity to the reference scent.
-
Fragrance intensity at the planned dosage.
-
Appearance and compatibility in the product base.
-
Scent during use and after use.
-
Fragrance retention on fabric, where applicable.
-
Scent and product appearance during storage.
If you already have a product base, share relevant information with your enquiry. If your formulation is still being developed, explain your intended product and performance targets.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can You Match a Fragrance From a Finished Detergent?
Yes, you can submit a finished liquid detergent as a reference. Contact us before shipping so we can confirm the sample requirements and intended application.
Do I Need the Original Fragrance Formula?
You can begin with a physical reference sample without providing the original fragrance formula.
How Close Will the Fragrance Be to My Reference?
The development target is to recreate the reference scent as closely as possible. We send you a developed fragrance sample so you can assess the match and provide your approval.
How Long Does Development Take?
Laboratory development takes approximately 2–3 weeks after receipt of your reference sample. Shipping time and any further development discussed after your evaluation are separate.
Can I Evaluate the Sample Before Buying in Bulk?
Yes. We send you a developed fragrance sample for evaluation. After approving it, you can decide whether to purchase the concentrate in 20 kg quantities.
Will the Fragrance Have the Same Longevity on Laundry?
Fragrance retention should be included in your brief and assessed in the finished product. A close scent match alone does not establish identical performance on fabric.
Test the developed fragrance in your detergent or softener under representative washing and drying conditions.
Can the Same Fragrance Be Used in Detergent, Softener and Surface Cleaner?
Tell us every intended application before development. Suitability, dosage and performance should be evaluated separately in each product base.
Can I Develop My Own Formula With the Purchased Fragrance?
Yes. You can incorporate the fragrance concentrate into your own product development or provide it to your chosen manufacturer.
Finished-product formulation development is a separate requirement to discuss if you need additional support.
How Much Does Detergent Fragrance Matching Cost?
Request a quotation for your reference and intended application. Development pricing, sample arrangements and bulk supply terms are confirmed after reviewing the project.
